What about Afghanistan?

The war in Afghanistan isn't going well. Britain's top commander "We're not going to win this war," and the latest U.S. National Intelligence Estimate notes that the country is in a "downward spiral." What! What do you think should be done?

I think that we should finish the job. At times i'm sure we didn't think that WW2 was ever going to end but it did because we stuck to it and in teh end prevailed. Especially with all the new technology coming out things could turn for the better. However, I haven't really done enough research and cannot be certain what to do in this situation and could be wrong.

True, but WWII was a clear cut war against a clear cut enemy; the Axis of Evil. In WWII we knew who the enemy was; men with guns wearing different color uniforms. But in Afghanistan the enemy is everywhere. It could be a car full of women with a bomb in the trunk or 15 year old boy with dynamite strapped to his chest in a crowded market. How do you fight against that? In Afghanistan we're fighting for the hearts and minds of the citizens who are the terrorists we're fighting against. I have my doubts about us being able to win over hearts and minds using military operations. But one thing is for sure, we need to shift our focus from Iraq to Afghanistan and Pakistan in order for us to prevent another attack by Al-Qaida and/or other terrorist groups that live in the mountains and deserts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

I dont see the reason to pull out now. I think it has been clear we were losing the war awhile ago and just now they bring this to our attention. We have spent a lot of money on this i think we should push to finish it. if we pull out now i believe the world would consider us cowards!

Finish it as fast and right as possible.

We need to pull troops out of Iraq and bring more troops into Afghanistan. The best idea would be to invade Pakistan to get to the Al-Qaida safe zones.

the US has had a reputation of gettin things done. other countries respect us. to pull out now is pointless and weak. the war might be hard to handle mentaly with the enemy at every corner but we have came this far. every little bit counts. we need to hust pick away until we find the achilles heel of this war and break them down. do what we do best

We do need to stick to it. We can do it. The Soviets were there for 10 years. They made one constant mistake for those 10 years, they underestimated the enemy and the enemies resolve. We have the same problem. We, in America, have this view that we are invicible, we arnt! We have to put our full might into not just catching Osama but dismantling the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Just catching Osama wont end it all. You cant win a chess game by getting just the king. Yes it will be hard, and the road will not be short, but we ARE the greatest country on Earth, we CAN do anything, we just have to commit to it. It's time we showed the world that we are the United States of America, and we will NOT lose!

The US has a repustaion for getting things done? what about Vietnam? and we didn't finish the job in the first Gulf War and thats a big reason why we're still there today. Look at Korea, we went in there in the 50's we still have armed troops lined up along the 38th parallel. Judging by our military history in the last 50 years I'd be suprised if we're out of Iraq or Afghanistan in 10 years.

I don't agree about invading Pakistan. The last thing we need is to spread our troops across even more countries and areas. But I do agree that the flow of Pakistanis across the border and into Al-Qaida camps is a large problem. I'm not sure this is a war we can win in the next five ot ten years.

Who said attack Pakistan? Are you crazy!

Pakistan is a threat. I think invading Pakistan would be another mistake in middle east. but one thing is for sure; if they're harboring terrorists something needs to be done. I'm no expect on US-Pakistani relations but I think its crucial to our national security and our middle eastern interests that we try to use diplomatic measures to make sure the pakistani government does something about terrorists in their country

The world already sees us as invaders rather than liberators. Not saying we are invaders, but we already have problems with Iran, im sure they will be next, but Pakistan, although a threat, I think can actually be resolved in diplomacy. We need to save our resources for a rainy day, or nuclear winter, whatever comes first.
