Should Everyone be Required to Have Health Insurance?

A proposal going before the Senate Finance Committee this week includes the mandate for health care. Those unable to afford health insurance should get government help but others who can afford coverage but choose not to get it should face coverage requirement similar to those for auto insurance.

Consumers currently pay higher health insurance premiums due to the costs run up by hospitals and other facilities providing care to uninsured people.

According to President Obama "for us to say you have to take responsibility to get health insurance is absolutely not a tax increase."

What do you think?

Well as much as I don't like having the Government force you to do anything, I think this is a good thing. If a person does not have insurance, and lets say they get in an accident, who picks up the tab for their care? TAXPAYERS do. If you choose to not have healthcare, that is just plain stupid.

This is a good idea in theory, making sure everyone has health care. However, with a car you can just make it illegal to drive without insurance, but you can't very well make it illegal to live without insurance.

Alec not everyone can afford to pay for healthcare. It's not really a choice. I mean don't you think people would rather have healthcare than not? I do like the part about those who can't afford it would get some, but they can't really force a person to get healthcare if they can afford it. There should just be universal healthcare. Problem solved.

I agree with what Christine said about health care, to an extent. I also think that most people would rather have health care than not, but if they can't afford it then why force them to have it. I think that providing health care for people is a good thing but I also think that there are bigger issues that come into play with the health care. Like who is going to pay for it. Also, the immigration issue. Illegal immigrants are paid for by our (those the have insurance) insurance. The money essentially comes out of our pockets. So, why should we have to continue to pay for those people. Shouldn't the government also focus on the other factors that are leading to the immense problems about health care, not just health care in general? Also, let's make sure that our legislators know what the bill actually says, not just what they think that it says, because not know what you're voting in can be a major issue, and more than likely, a major mistake.

Christine I did not say that there arent people that cant afford healthcare. Im sure there are, but there ARE people who can afford it and choose to go without. My Step Father for instance, is one of those people. Some people are stupid and do stupid things. Dont try and tell me that there are not people who choose to go without healthcare, because I know there are.

ok so maybe I misunderstood a little. I agree that people who can afford healthcare should get it and if not and they get into an accident or hurt it is wrong that tax payers would foot the bill, but who decides who can afford it and who can't? There is no right answer in how to decide who can and can't.
